Call Home vs Smart Transport (Smart Licensing)
✅ 1. Purpose & Role
Call Home
- Originally designed as a generic messaging and alerting mechanism (e.g., TAC alerts, diagnostics, telemetry).
- Later adapted as a legacy transport option for Smart Licensing.
- Still works, but not the preferred method for modern Smart Licensing workflows.

The system periodically synchronizes license information with Cisco Smart Software Manager. Normal license communication occurs every 30 days, but with the grace period, your appliance will operate for up to 90 days without calling home.
